Southborough: From Humble Beginnings to Exclusivity
First established in 1660 as a rural farming community by European settlers and officially incorporated in July 1727, the original inhabitants of the area were the native Nipmuck tribe. Southborough's small rivers supported mills that helped transformed the town into an important producer of plasters, boots, shoes, and other goods by the end of the 19th century.
The Origins of Southborough's Name
Southborough split off from Marlborough in 1727, becoming the “south borough” of the area. Today Southborough is bordered by six towns, including

A Reservoir Is Born
An important development in Southborough's history, the town's reservoir system was created to in the 1890s to provide Boston with water. The creation of the reservoir required flooding the Stony Brook as well as 2,000 acres of fertile farmland, which changed the typography of the town dramatically.
Southborough has since grown into a residential suburb of Boston and is largely inhabited by white-collar professionals. The high-tech boom of the 1970s spurred significant growth, yet Southborough is still small enough and the properties expansive enough to preserve the town's rural feel; Southborough had just under 10,000 residents as of the 2010 census.
